Brushing and Flossing Procedures
Routine home care is very important. Each one of us has the job of
maintaining our mouths and teeth to help keep us in good health.
Ideally, you should brush and floss in the morning, after each meal
and snack during the day, and before you go to bed each night in
order to reduce the decay and gum disease causing bacteria in the
mouth.
Brushing and Flossing
Brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily are
important. These actions remove the sticky plaque that accumulates
on our teeth. If the plaque is not removed it becomes the perfect
place for bacteria to gather and begin the decay process. Flossing
helps to remove any food that becomes trapped between teeth and at
the gum line.
There are many types of toothbrushes on the market. It is generally
recommended that you use a soft bristle brush at a 45 angle to your
teeth, brushing in the direction that the teeth grow, that is: from
the gum down for top teeth and from the gum up on the bottom teeth
front and back, and at a horizontal angle on the biting surfaces on
the molars. Floss comes in many varieties, waxed, un-waxed, tape,
and in many flavors, etc. Ask your dentist which type is recommended
for you.
Fluoride Rinses and Mouthwash
Some dentists recommend fluoride rinses or special mouthwash for
their patients. You may want to check with your dentist to see what
is recommended for patients who live in your area. If you live in an
area that fluoride added to your municipal drinking water system,
you will receive extra protection against tooth decay.
Toothpaste
When you go to the store to pick out toothpaste, you will be
surprised at the variety of choices and flavors. Toothpastes have
been formulated to eliminate decay, strengthen teeth, reduce tartar,
whiten teeth, freshen breath, and eliminate tooth sensitivity. They
are available in all forms: pastes, gels, drops and powders and in
every color and flavor imaginable. Ask you dentist what type he or
she recommends.
